Microsoft hires former OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to lead new AI team

Several members of OpenAI, including co-founder Brockman, left the company in protest last week. Nadella said Altman and Brockman will have "colleagues," suggesting that the Microsoft is also hiring many other people who left OpenAI over the weekend.

The decision comes after a tumultuous weekend that saw Altman removed from his role at OpenAI by the organization's board on Friday. After his departure, Brockman also resigned. Negotiations for their possible return to OpenAI were unsuccessful, concluding late on Sunday. Instead, OpenAI's board chose to hire former Twitch CEO and co-founder Emmett Shear as its interim CEO. OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier in the weekend, Altman also started present a new AI venture to Investors, according to the New York Times.

“We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and are confident in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and to continue to support our customers and partners. We look forward to meeting and working with Emmett Shear and the new OAI leadership team,” added Nadella.

OpenAI's board said it had removed Altman because he had not been "consistently candid" in his conversations with them. He did not elaborate on the reasoning, which angered many OpenAI employees. "The board had an opportunity to explain its drastic actions and didn't take it," Andrej Karpathy, a researcher at OpenAI, wrote in X.
