Microsoft quietly fixed Windows 11's Settings Group Policy after breaking it and not telling anyone

While Patch Tuesday updates, which are deployed every second Tuesday of the month, are meant to be the most important releases as they add security fixes and other new features, they often tend to introduce bugs and some of them are quite significant.

Μιλώντας για τις Πολιτικές ομάδας, αυτό για τον Οκτώβριο στα Windows 11 (KB5031354) οδήγησε σε ένα πρόβλημα όπου η πολιτική “Ορατότητα σελίδας ρυθμίσεων” θα αποτύγχανε να εφαρμοστεί ή η application “Ρυθμίσεις” θα διακοπεί, και αυτό προκαλούσε μεγάλη ταλαιπωρία και ενόχληση στο επηρεαζόμενο IT διαχειριστές και διαχειριστές συστήματος σε όλες τις businesses.

Installing KB5031354 (OS Build 22621.2428) causes the “settings visibility page” of the GPO setting to malfunction.

The GPO setting value is populated with settings that are accessible to our domain users: “ShowOnly:easeofaccess-audio;yourinfo;defaultapps;bluetooth;printers;mousetouchpad;typing;usb;easeofaccess-closedcaptioning; ….”

After removing KB5031354, the GPO setting “settings visibility page” is applied correctly again.

User Abel Ong also had the same question as he posted a question on Microsoft Q&A section along with their findings:

Η επιλογή που έθεσα για την πολιτική ήταν: showonly:display;printers

However, after configuring the policy and applying it, the Settings app on Windows 11 computers kept crashing before opening.

I've done some testing myself and here are the things I discovered:

After every change I make to the GPO, I force a gpupdate on a user computer and check gpresult if the GPO is applied and it is, not filtered.

• I tried applying the policy only to User Configuration and Computer Configuration, or to both Computer and User Configuration, but it still stopped applying settings in each case.
• The policy worked with both hide and show options only when applied to a Windows 10 computer.
• The policy worked when I used hide instead of showonly as an option, it successfully hid the menus I specified and the settings app didn't crash.
• I tried accessing the settings app and its subsequent pages via Run and CMD, but it still hangs.
• Logged in to the same user on different computers, settings are still broken.
• Used SFC to scan for corrupted system files, but there were none.

I checked the Event Viewer and there were errors saying that the settings application is stopping due to an unknown reason.

Although it wasn't listed as part of known issues, it looks like Microsoft managed to fix the problem with the latest patch Tuesday (KB5032190), according to user reports online. However, since it was not documented as a known issue, it has not been marked as a resolved issue either.

We had a case open with Microsoft, it seems it was a known bug in KB5031354. They have been resolved in the November 2023 cumulative update W11 KB5032190. I've tested today on a similarly affected test machine after installing KB5032190 and it seems to be working fine once again.

Ως εκ τούτου, η εφαρμογή Ρυθμίσεις δεν θα πρέπει πλέον να διακόπτεται και το Ρυθμίσεις GP θα πρέπει να λειτουργεί όπως προβλέπεται. Εάν τυχαίνει να είστε ένας από τους χρήστες που επηρεάζονται, θα πρέπει να ελέγξετε αν αυτό το σφάλμα επιμένει μετά την εφαρμογή του Patch Tuesday αυτού του μήνα. Σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, η επικοινωνία με τη Microsoft μπορεί να είναι η μόνη επιλογή.
