Η Boston Dynamics recently revealed its new generation Atlas, a humanoid robot aimed at offering a dramatically increased range of motion compared to its predecessor. The company aims to prove with this model that the humanoid form does not limit the possibilities of a bipedal robot.
Design for Better Movement and Flexibility
Unlike the previous version, the new generation Atlas was designed from the ground up with swivel joints, dramatically increasing its flexibility. Boston Dynamics emphasizes that this makes the Atlas "uniquely capable of taking on tedious, dirty and dangerous tasks."
According to the company's press release, the electric version of the Atlas is "stronger, more agile and more flexible". The focus is not limited to human mimicry, but to adopting movements that allow tasks to be completed in the most efficient way, exceeding human capabilities.
Impressive Features and Design
The short video showing the capabilities of the new Atlas is impressive and disturbing at the same time. It begins with the robot rising from the floor in a horror-movie-like manner, while its rotation around its waist is awe-inspiring.
The design of the Atlas adopts a more anthropomorphic form, with longer limbs, straight backs and a clearly distinct "head". The cables are not visible, while the "face" has an integrated light ring.
Improvements and Applications
Boston Dynamics is also focusing on improving Atlas' existing capabilities, such as lifting and moving objects, while also exploring "several new grip variations" to adapt to different industrial environments.
The company announced that the new Atlas will be tested by a small group of customers, starting with Hyundai "in the next few years". Competing humanoid robots from companies such as Figure and Apptronik are already being tested on the production lines of BMW and Mercedes, respectively.
