Social media platform X is set to implement a 'small fee' for new users, according to Elon Musk. The charge, which will apply to content posted, likes, replies and bookmarks to tweets, is aimed at tackling the problem of bots and spam.
X Daily News, source of information about X, detected changes on the website that indicate the impending charge. Musk, in his response, confirmed the charge, stressing that it is "the only way to limit the relentless onslaught of bots".
The charge has previously been tested in New Zealand and the Philippines and will only concern new users. Upon registration, new users will either have to pay the fee or wait three months before they can interact with the platform.
Twitter says:
“New accounts must pay a small annual fee before you can post, like, bookmark and reply. This is to reduce spam and create a better experience for everyone. You can still follow accounts and browse X for free.”
Although the text does not explicitly mention the possibility of free posting after three months, Musk has confirmed that “action registrations” will be free after this space.
The effectiveness of the fee in dealing with bots and spam accounts remains questionable. While paying may discourage some spammers, others may be willing to pay or create multiple accounts to circumvent the system. At the same time, the fee may also discourage regular users, who may turn to other free social networks.
The amount of the charge is estimated at approximately 1 dollar, as in New Zealand it amounts to 1,75 NZD. The pay-for-access policy has not yet been implemented outside of New Zealand and the Philippines.
Musk has also addressed the problem of fake accounts hijacking good username choices. X has already released over a million usernames and plans to "release tens of millions in the coming weeks."
It remains to be seen whether charging for new users will actually prove beneficial for the platform. Time will tell if it will help reduce bots and spam or if it will lead to users leaving.
In conclusion:
X is preparing to put a "barrier" on new members! Soon, new users will have to pay a small amount to post, like, reply and paginate tweets.
Why is he doing that; Elon Musk says the fee is necessary to stop the "flood" of bots and spam.
Where has it been tested so far? The charge has already been implemented in New Zealand and the Philippines.
What about old users? Old users are not affected. They can continue to use X for free.
How much will it cost? The amount has not been finalized, but is estimated to be around $1.
Will it work? It remains to be seen. Some believe the fee will discourage spammers, while others worry it will drive away regular users as well.
What else is X doing to improve the platform? X also releases millions of usernames that were taken over by fake accounts.
Overall, charging for new users is a controversial move. Time will tell if she will achieve her goal.
