We often feel like we live in a fully connected world, but anyone who has found themselves without a signal in a time of need can tell you that's far from the truth. Emergency satellite connectivity is a solution to this problem and, according to Android Authority's Kamila Wojciechowska, it seems that the series Google Pixel 9 and the next generation Google Fold will offer it.
The feature will reportedly be available first to customers of T-Mobile, thanks to the cooperation of the network provider with SpaceX to create monthly Communicatevia satellite. It may become available on other networks in the future.
The messaging service reportedly asks users questions such as "How best to describe your situation?" and "Are there weapons involved?" It is unclear whether the feature will be free for Google users Pixel 9 and the next-generation Google Fold. T-Mobile has not confirmed pricing for the monthly satellite service in previous announcements.
If the news is true, Google will follow in the footsteps of Apple, which launched its own Satellite Emergency SOS feature in late 2022 for iPhone 14 users in countries such as the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The tool has since been expanded to include the iPhone 15 and countries like Australia and New Zealand, where there are large areas of wilderness where there is no mobile signal.
